In May of 2023, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before Congress in an effort to encourage more regulation of artificial intelligence. Altman’s visit was inspired by the viral success of OpenAI’s chatbot tool, ChatGPT, and the growing list of tech companies developing similar technologies. Altman advised the Senate Judiciary Committee that “regulatory intervention by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models.” Chances are, professionals in many fields are already using AI to support their projects, and they are doing so ethically. However, as these technologies become more powerful, questions about new regulations and codes of ethics will become more prominent. How is AI currently used in your field, and what ethical considerations do professionals need to make while using these technologies? What are the potential risks and benefits of these technologies, and how might regulation of AI affect your field moving forward?
Essay Requirements:
The scholarship committee will judge essays based on the following:
- Have a GPA of 3.75 or better after six semesters.
- Take the ACT (or SAT) test before Dec. 1, 2023, and receive an ACT superscore of 31 or higher or a SAT superscore of 1390 EBRW or higher.
- Be a resident of the state of Missouri.
- Be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. permanent resident.
- Be a Spring 2024 high school graduate.
- Applied for admission to Missouri S&T no later than November 14, 2023
- Submit scholarship application and essay by deadline: December 1, 2023

Essay Requirements:
- Your persuasive essay should be 750 words maximum typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman font and double spaced (please note that the title and reference page will not be counted in the 750 word count, but in-text citations will be counted).
- Your essay must use APA style formatting; you must exclude your name and high school affiliation to maintain anonymity (you can put something generic on the title page, such as "future student" and your institution should be Missouri University of Science and Technology).
- An abstract page is not needed.
- Your reference page should include a minimum of 3 references.
